Overview

Private Camp TSUMUGI is a fully reserved campground in Hinohara Village, the only village within the Tokyo metropolitan boundary. Perched at an elevation of 600 meters, the 1,500-square-meter grounds are available to just one group at a time, ensuring complete privacy in a setting that feels entirely removed from the capital city below.

The centerpiece of the property is a 400-year-old kominka, a traditional Japanese farmhouse with thick wooden beams and a deep sense of history. The farmhouse has been carefully maintained and now serves as a communal space with a library room equipped with power outlets and free WiFi. A traditional irori firepit inside provides warmth and atmosphere during cooler months.

Outside, the campground spreads across a spacious field covered with wood chips made from locally sourced cypress and cedar, creating a soft and fragrant surface for tent camping. Free rental tents and fire pits are available for guests who prefer not to bring their own gear. For a distinctive experience, an optional tent sauna uses aromatic essential water distilled from cedar and cypress at an adjacent aroma distillery on the property.

The surrounding Hinohara landscape is defined by steep forested valleys, clear streams, and hiking trails that wind through some of the most rugged terrain in the Tokyo region. The campground sits along one such stream, offering nature exploration opportunities right at your doorstep. The site is also pet-friendly, welcoming dogs to share in the outdoor experience.

Hinohara Village is part of the Akigawa Valley area, known for its autumn foliage, mountain tofu restaurants, and the Hossawa Falls, one of Tokyo's most impressive waterfalls. Despite its remote feeling, the village is reachable in roughly 90 minutes from Shinjuku by car.

Private Camp TSUMUGI is ideal for groups of friends or families who want an exclusive natural retreat with historical character, modern amenities where it matters, and the rare experience of having an entire mountainside campground to themselves.
