Best River Play Campgrounds Near Tokyo

Japanese summer camping revolves around the river. Crystal-clear mountain streams, gravel-bar camping, and cool water under a forest canopy — this is mizuasobi (水遊び).

Why river play is a Japanese camping staple

In Japan, summer heat and humidity drive campers to the mountains — and to the rivers. The concept of mizuasobi (水遊び, literally "water play") is central to Japanese family camping. Kids wade in shallow streams, adults set up chairs in ankle-deep water with a cold beer, and everyone escapes the suffocating heat of the lowlands. The Tanzawa Mountains in western Kanagawa are the closest mountain river system to Tokyo, making them the most popular destination for river camping day trips and weekend getaways.

Many campgrounds in Kanagawa are built along rivers specifically to offer this experience. Some sites are directly on gravel bars (kawara / 河原) where you pitch your tent meters from the water. For a detailed guide to the best river areas, read our Tanzawa riverside camping guide.

Best rivers for swimming and play near Tokyo

  • Nakatsugawa River — The most popular free camping river near Tokyo. Clear, shallow water ideal for children. Gravel bars for tent camping. Access via Odakyu Line to Hon-Atsugi, then bus.
  • Sagami River — Wider and deeper than the Nakatsugawa. Better for groups and stronger swimmers. Several managed campgrounds along its banks between Sagamihara and Atsugi.
  • Doshi River — Follows Route 413 into Yamanashi Prefecture. Known as "Camper's Road" with dozens of riverside campgrounds. Water quality is excellent.
  • Hayakawa River (Hakone) — Runs through the Hakone area. More scenic than swimable, but several campgrounds offer wading areas. Combine with an onsen soak for the ultimate water day.

River safety essentials

Japanese mountain rivers are beautiful but dangerous. The Kanagawa Prefecture government issues river safety warnings every summer. Key dangers include:

  • Flash floods — Rain upstream can raise water levels within 30 minutes, even under clear skies at your location. If you hear a siren or see the water turn muddy, move to higher ground immediately.
  • Slippery rocks — River stones in Japan are often coated with invisible algae that becomes extremely slick when wet. Falls on rocks are the most common river injury.
  • Cold water — Mountain river water stays cold year-round. Prolonged swimming can cause cramping, even in August.
  • Dam releases — Some rivers have upstream dams that release water on a schedule. Warning signs are posted in Japanese. If you see concrete channels or unusual water level markings, be cautious.

Always supervise children closely near water. Japanese rivers can go from ankle-deep to waist-deep in just a few steps due to hidden pools and uneven riverbeds.

What to bring for a river campground

  • Water shoes — Essential. River gravel is rough on bare feet. Available at Workman, Daiso, and outdoor shops for ¥500–2,000.
  • Thick ground sheet — Gravel-bar camping requires a heavier tarp than forest sites. River rocks will puncture thin ground sheets.
  • Waterproof dry bag — Keep phones, wallets, and keys safe from splashes and accidental drops.
  • Insect repellent — River valleys trap humidity and breed mosquitoes. Apply generously at dusk.
  • Extra water — Free riverside sites have no running water. Bring at least 2 liters per person per day.
  • Sun protection — River reflections intensify UV exposure. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and a rashguard for swimming.
