Yokosuka Camping & Glamping: Coastal Escapes from Tokyo
Most people think of mountains and rivers when they picture camping near Tokyo. Yokosuka offers something different: coastal camping and glamping on the edge of Tokyo Bay, where the horizon is open water and the sunsets light up the Miura Peninsula. The city sits at the southern tip of the Miura Peninsula in Kanagawa, just 70 minutes from Shinagawa by train. It has a fascinating mix of Japanese naval history, American military presence, fresh seafood, and — at the Kannonzaki headland — one of the most scenic coastal glamping settings within day-trip distance of Tokyo.
Why Yokosuka
Yokosuka is not a typical tourist destination, and that is part of its appeal. While weekenders crowd into Kamakura and Enoshima, Yokosuka's coastline stays quiet. The Kannonzaki headland — a rocky point at the entrance to Tokyo Bay — has walking trails through coastal forest, a historic lighthouse, and views across to the Boso Peninsula in Chiba. The air here smells like salt and pine, and the only crowds are local families on weekend walks.
For outdoor-minded visitors, the combination of coastal scenery, hot springs, and easy train access from Tokyo makes Yokosuka an underrated destination.
La Vista Yokosuka Kannonzaki Terrace
The La Vista Yokosuka Kannonzaki Terrace is the headline accommodation at Kannonzaki. Sitting on the headland with sweeping Tokyo Bay views, it combines resort-level comfort with an outdoor terrace atmosphere that draws the glamping crowd. The on-site hot spring is the star feature — an onsen overlooking Tokyo Bay where you soak in mineral water while watching ships navigate the bay entrance.
The property is not traditional tent glamping — it is a structured resort with outdoor character. But the seaside terraces, BBQ areas, coastal walking trails, and the sheer joy of waking up to ocean views give it a distinctly outdoor feel. It works particularly well for couples or small groups who want the nature escape without the camping logistics. For more hot spring glamping options, see our hot spring glamping in Kanagawa guide.
- Onsen: On-site hot spring with Tokyo Bay views — the main draw
- Price: From around ¥15,000-25,000/night depending on room and season
- Food: Restaurant on-site; BBQ options available
- Setting: Oceanfront headland, surrounded by Kannonzaki Park
Kannonzaki Park and trails
Even if you are not staying at La Vista, Kannonzaki Park is worth visiting. The park covers the headland with walking trails through coastal forest and along rocky cliffs. Key highlights:
- Kannonzaki Lighthouse — Japan's first Western-style lighthouse, built in 1869. Small entry fee. Climb to the top for panoramic bay views.
- Coastal walking trails — Several kilometers of paths along the rocky shoreline. Easy terrain, beautiful views, and relatively uncrowded even on weekends.
- Yokosuka Museum of Art — A striking modernist building on the waterfront within the park. Worth a visit even if art is not your primary interest — the architecture and setting are excellent.
- Tidal pools and fishing — The rocky coastline has tidal pools for exploring and spots for shore fishing.
Other outdoor options
Beyond Kannonzaki, the broader Yokosuka and Miura Peninsula area offers:
- Sarushima (Monkey Island) — An uninhabited island in Tokyo Bay, accessible by a short ferry from Mikasa Park. BBQ areas, walking trails, and ruins of old military fortifications. One of the few places near Tokyo where you can have a "deserted island" experience. Day-use only.
- Jogashima — A small island at the very tip of the Miura Peninsula, connected by bridge. Hiking trails, rocky coastline, and a lighthouse. Quieter than Enoshima with similar coastal beauty.
- Miura Beach — The western coast of the Miura Peninsula has several beaches. Less famous than Shonan but also less crowded.
Getting there
- By train: Keikyu Line from Shinagawa to Yokosuka-chuo (about 50 min) or Uraga (about 60 min). From Uraga, take a local bus to Kannonzaki (about 15 min). Total: roughly 70-80 min from central Tokyo.
- By car: Yokohama-Yokosuka Road from Yokohama, then Route 16 south. About 60-80 min from central Tokyo depending on traffic. Parking available at Kannonzaki Park and La Vista.
- Day trip viable: Yes. Yokosuka works well as a day trip from Tokyo — visit Kannonzaki Park, have seafood for lunch, and return by train in the afternoon.
What to do in Yokosuka
Yokosuka has more personality than a typical Tokyo suburb:
- Yokosuka Navy Curry — The city's famous dish, a rich Japanese-style curry with a naval history. Restaurants throughout the city serve their own versions. It is a legitimate food destination.
- Dobuita Street — A shopping street near the US Naval Base with a mix of Japanese and American culture — embroidered jackets (sukajan), bars, and international restaurants.
- Mikasa Park — The preserved battleship Mikasa, a museum ship from the Russo-Japanese War, sits in a waterfront park. Interesting even for non-military-history fans.
- Fresh seafood — Yokosuka and the Miura Peninsula are fishing areas. Restaurants near the port serve sashimi, grilled fish, and seafood rice bowls at reasonable prices.
Best season to visit
- Spring (March-May): Mild coastal weather. Cherry blossoms at various parks. Comfortable for walking and outdoor activities.
- Summer (June-September): Warm and humid but ocean breezes help. Best for beach activities and Sarushima visits. Evenings at Kannonzaki with bay views are excellent.
- Autumn (October-November): Clear skies, comfortable temperatures. Best visibility across Tokyo Bay. Ideal for the onsen at La Vista — warm bath, cool air.
- Winter (December-February): Cold but clear. The onsen at La Vista is at its best in winter — nothing beats a hot outdoor bath in cold air with ocean views. Lowest prices for accommodation.
Combining with other trips
Yokosuka combines well with other Kanagawa destinations:
- Yokosuka + Kamakura: Visit temples in the morning, head to Kannonzaki in the afternoon. Easy by train.
- Yokosuka + Miura fishing village: Fresh tuna at Misaki Port, then head north to Kannonzaki for the onsen.
- Yokosuka + Hakone: Coast one day, mountains the next. Two very different Kanagawa experiences within easy reach of each other.
